Game of Throne Author Along With 17 Others Sue OpenAI Over Copyright Claims

George R.R. Martin, celebrated for his ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ book—the inspiration for HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’—is leading a group of 17 illustrious authors in a lawsuit against ChatGPT’s developer, OpenAI. This week, the author group, which includes likes of David Baldacci, Jonathan Franzen, John Grisham, and Jodi Picoult, expressed their grievances at the AI firm in Manhattan’s federal court.

The Heart of the Matter:

The Authors Guild claims that Microsoft-supported OpenAI committed “systemic theft on a mass scale”. The bone of contention? Using copyrighted content from these authors to train its AI models, specifically ChatGPT, without due authorization.
